Turning the Church Inside Out

I was discussing with some young leaders this week the need to constantly turn the church inside out.  Yes, we were discussing the Great Commission to “go and make disciples” but I said it’s more than just encouraging people toward evangelism, it’s about focus.

When you turn a shirt inside out, it looks different.  The inside becomes visible to everyone.  If the seams are lose you see it.  When a church truly changes it’s focus from “What is God going to do for me today?” to “How can I help connect someone to God today?” the weakness are exposed.  The threads hanging loosely from the seams that haven’t mattered because they were internal now need to be fixed.

Practical things like how welcoming your lobby is become important but there are spiritual seams exposed also.  Remember this: Everyone says they want to reach souls for Jesus until you start to make changes reach souls.  Then are little secret threads like selfishness and pettiness are exposed.

I am determined not to have a church that is just for Christians.  I am determined to teach, preach, encourage, challenge, prod, poke, activate, irritate and motivate believers to go and make disciples.  I am determined to turn the church inside out.

Whoa Now THAT”S good. Keep getting down to the bottom line Pastor. If we really want to be changed , that’s the kind of truth we all need to hear.
