For those of you who asked for it, here’s the gates from Nehemiah 3. Each gate had a purpose for Israel and I would like to say they have and application for us today and even the order is interesting.
Sheep Gate – We need to become part of the sheep fold. First build relationships Christ through slavation then with other believers who will strengthen our faith. – 1st gate rebuilt: Connecting to God & Church. Decide to follow Christ and connect with other sheep.
Fish Gate – After salvation we need to become fishers of men. – 2nd gate rebuilt: Reaching Others. Make a decision to be actively sharing Christ with others.
Old Gate – it means, Long remaining. To me a symbol of remembering the ancient ways taught in scripture. It also makes me think of returning to our first love. Rebuild the gate of making decisions based on scripture and God’s will.
City Gate – This is the place of commerce. The caravans would stop and trade at the city gates. It was also where the town meeting happened, the government help public meetings at the city gate. We need to be involved in our city and have God involved in our Financial Decisions.
Valley Gate – Humbleness, Jesus was the “Lily of the Valley”. This is a picture of prayer, illustrating our dependence upon God. Don’t make any major decisions without prayer.
The valley gate was the one I forgot last Sunday, sorry.
Dung Gate – The place of the removing of refuse, throwing away the useless things. What’s taking up your time, wasting your energy or distracting you from you destiny? Decide to eliminate waste.
Fountain Gate– Holy Spirit; Springs of Living Water, refreshing. We need to be led by The Spirit. Listen to the still, small voice and follow God’s leading in our decisions.
Water Gate – This reminds me of the washing of word. This was the only part of wall that was still standing when Nehemiah went back to rebuild. The word is eternal build your life on it.
East Gate – Adam & Eve we put in a garden called Eden in East. When they were cast out, they were sent East of Eden. They were sent out because of their sin but sent with a prophesy of hope. Eve was told that her offspring would crush the serpent’s head. Even when we sin, as sun rises in the East, His mercy is new every morning – It’s a Gate of Hope. Decide to go on when you sin because there is hope.
Horse Gate – Horses many times in scripture are used as symbols of war. This is the Gate of Spiritual Warfare. After rebuilding all the other things in our lives we can’t neglect spiritual warfare. We are in a battle whether we want to be or not.
Inspection Gate – After the other gates are all rebuilt in our lives we understand how to inspect things to make good decisions. – Gate of Wisdom
